Years ago, after my foster mother died I found a surprise check in the mail. The attached letter informed me that my foster parents had given me the same amount of money that their nieces and nephews had received.
I never expected such generosity because I was not a blood relative. And they had already given me something incredible — a second chance. A chance that allowed me to work hard to graduate high school with honors, get into West Point, and become an officer in the U.S. Army.
While holding that check in my hands I realized that I needed to do something with the gift that my foster folks would approve of. I decided to use the money to fuel my desire to be a writer who could craft stories capable of touching the hearts of others.
It took years to get my first book published and see if it met that criteria. It did. Gold Rush 2000 won the National Publishers Freedom Award for Best Fiction from a small press. Other books in the Gold Lust Series followed. And two weeks ago, Centurion Witness became an Amazon #1 Bestseller and was the Bronze winner of The Global Book Awards for self-published Historical Fiction.
What was really special, in the book that won super recognition, was the dedication I had written. I thanked Hilda and Harry Hoseney for changing my life.
It took a long time, but I think I made them proud.
